چکیده

We have discovered remarkable jetand arc-like molecular features toward the rich and young stellar cluster Westerlund2. The jet has a length of ∼ 100 pc and a width of ∼ 10 pc, while the arc shows a crescent shape with a radius of ∼ 30 pc. These molecular features each have masses of ∼ 10M⊙ and show spatial correlations with the surrounding lower density HI gas. The jet also shows an intriguing positional alignment with the core of the TeV gamma ray source HESS J1023-575 and with the MeV/GeV gamma-ray source recently reported by the Fermi collaboration. We argue that the jet and arc are caused by an energetic event in Westerlund 2, presumably due to an anisotropic supernova explosion of one of the most massive member stars. While the origin of the TeV and GeV gamma-ray sources is uncertain, one may speculate that they are related to the same event via relativistic particle acceleration by strong shock waves produced at the explosion or by remnant objects such as a pulsar wind nebula or microquasar.

TeV gamma - rays from photo - disintegration / de - excitation of nuclei in Westerlund 2

TeV gamma-rays can result from the photo-de-excitation of PeV cosmic ray nuclei after their parents have undergone photo-disintegration in an environment of ultraviolet photons. This process is proposed as a candidate explanation of the recently discovered HESS source at the edge of Westerlund 2. The UV background is provided by Lyman-alpha emission within the rich O and B stellar environment. ...

Molecular Clouds Towards RCW49 and Westerlund 2; Evidence for Cluster Formation Triggered by Cloud-Cloud Collision

We have made CO(J = 2− 1) observations towards the HII region RCW 49 and its ionizing source, the rich stellar cluster Westerlund 2, with the NANTEN2 sub-mm telescope. These observations have revealed that two molecular clouds in velocity ranges of −11 to +9 km s and 11 to 21 km s respectively, show remarkably good spatial correlations with the Spitzer IRAC mid-infrared image of RCW 49, as well...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

HESS J 1023 – 575 : Non - thermal particle acceleration associated with the young stellar cluster

The results from H.E.S.S. observations towards Westerlund 2 are presented. The detection of very-high-energy gamma-ray emission towards the young stellar cluster Westerlund 2 in the HII complex RCW49 by H.E.S.S. provides ample evidence that particle acceleration to extreme energies is associated with this region. A variety of possible emission scenarios is mentioned, ranging from high-energy ga...

Discovery of a Young Massive Stellar Cluster near Hess J1813-178

We present the serendipitous discovery of a young stellar cluster in the Galactic disk at l=12. Using Keck/NIRSPEC, we obtained high– and low–resolution spectroscopy of several stars in the cluster, and we identified one red supergiant and two blue supergiants. The radial velocity of the red supergiant provides a kinematic cluster distance of 4.7±0.4 kpc, implying luminosities of the stars cons...
